Dr Steve Cowley
Dr Steve Cowley has worked as an OHS consultant and academic for over 30 years in Australia and the United Kingdom. He has particular research interests in the areas of occupational hygiene, marketing OHS and sharing solutions. He is also the editor of the Safety Institute of Australia’s Journal of Health and Safety Research and Practice and the magazine, OHS Professional.

Professor Paul Barach
Paul Barach, B.Sc., MD (hon), MPH (hon), has over 15 years experience in researching, teaching and applying human factors in health. He has been integrally involved as a clinician, educator, researcher and policy maker in enhancing healthcare improvement and injury prevention policy in the United States, Europe and, more recently, Australia. His research focus is on developing and extending theoretical work in the areas of injury prevention, patient transition, worker and patient safety.
Paul is presently working with the Motor Accident's Authority and the Life Time Care Authority to develop the NSW Trauma Collaborative, a collaborative of practice designed to enhance the sharing and learning of best practices around trauma care and rehabilitation. He helped develop the Florida Patient Safety Corporation and helped to guide its efforts in developing a no fault healthcare insurance model.
Paul has published over 150 peer review papers and scientific communications. He is a board-certified Anesthesist and intensive care physician, with fellowship training in Cardiac Anesthesia, Critical Care medicine and human factors, at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. |

Gerard Newman Director, Governance and Secretariat, Comcare
Gerard Newman is Director of the Governance and Secretariat team within Comcare with responsibility for the provision of support and services to the Seacare Authority. Prior to this position, Gerard had responsibility for Comcare’s research and date analysis functions. Gerard has a Bachelor of Economics degree and spent the majority of his working life in the provision and management of research and information services to the Australian Parliament.

Teresa Hatch Executive Director, Australian Shipowners Association
Teresa is the Executive Director of the Australian Shipowners Association (ASA), where she has worked for seven years on a variety of topics including shipping policy, employment and training, environment, health and safety and vessel operations.
Teresa has a degree in Naval Architecture from the Australian Maritime College and began her career as a consultant in ship motion analysis and port/channel design. Prior to joining ASA Teresa worked as the Manager Technical Services for the Port Hedland Port Authority.
Teresa is the Australian shipowner representative at the United Nations International Labour Organisation and regularly attends the UN International Maritime Organisation meetings as an industry adviser to the Australian delegation.
Teresa is the Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping, Environment Sub-Committee and the Secretary General, Australia at the Asian Shipowners Forum. |

Mick Doleman Deputy National Secretary, Maritime Union of Australia
Mick Doleman became a seafarer in 1971 and has worked in several areas of the maritime industry including blue water, offshore, towage and dredging sectors. He began working for the Maritime Union of Australia in 1984 and is a representative of the International Transport Workers Federation and International Maritime Organisation. He has been a member of the Seacare Authority since 1999.

Flora Carapellucci Branch Manager, Safety and Compensation Policy Branch, Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
Flora is a senior public servant with experience in advising governments on a range of workplace relations, safety and compensation matters. In her current role, Flora and her team advise the Government on occupational health and safety and workers’ compensation arrangements in the Commonwealth jurisdiction, including the Seacare scheme. Flora and her team also advise the Government on national OHS harmonisation.
Flora has been involved in the OHS harmonisation process from its inception, including in developing the Inter-Governmental Agreement on OHS Reform, establishing the National Review into Model OHS Laws and overseeing the secretariat to the Review Panel. Flora represents the Commonwealth on Safe Work Australia’s Strategic Issues Group on OHS, which is developing model laws for adoption by all jurisdictions.

Murray Lembit Maritime Policy Reform Branch, Department of Infrastructure and Transport
Murray Lembit leads the team rewriting the 100 year old Navigation Act within the Maritime Policy Reform Branch. This involves working closely with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority which is also a key part of the rewrite team.
Murray has extensive experience as a public sector policy adviser and program administrator having recently assisted with the implementation of the major infrastructure aspects of the Government’s Economic Stimulus Plan and the establishment of Infrastructure Australia. |

Glen Holmes Product Development Manager, Queensland Rail
Glen has worked throughout the Queensland Rail (QR) business in the disciplines of enforcement, facilitation, safety, staff management, innovation and program delivery and is a great believer in accessing the potential from within the organisation.
Glen has been strategic in delivering cultural behaviour change in performance and safety to traincrew across the organisation by focusing on various behaviour strategy and communication campaigns. He is currently Product Development Managing the implementation of a suite of QR’s world class safety innovations including the delivery of the consultation strategy with traincrew employees state-wide. |

Steve Bell Senior Associate, Freehills
Steve is a senior associate in the Melbourne Employee Relations group at Freehills. He performs a senior role in the firm’s Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) practice. His focus on WHS involves assisting clients to proactively manage risk in the workplace, and ensure legal protection in the event of an incident or regulatory investigation. Steve works closely with clients from a range of industries, including the construction, transport, agricultural, manufacturing and financial industries, as well as Government departments and enterprises. |

Sherrilyn Mills Principal, Reliance Workplace Solutions
Sherrilyn Mills has been involved in workers’ compensation, injury management, vocational rehabilitation and occupational health and safety since 1996. Sherrilyn has a Masters Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Bachelor of Commerce with a double major in human resource management and industrial relations. She is currently enrolled in Phd at Curtin University conducting research on the organisational and psychosocial factors that prevent return to work and contribute to long duration workers compensation claims. Sherrilyn is also a lecturer at Curtin University in compensation and rehabilitation, occupational health and safety and industrial relations.
Sherrilyn’s interest lie in adopting a safety system approach to the management of illness and injuries in the workplace. This includes the implementation of effective workers’ compensation claim management processes specific to the needs of the organisation and its staff, prevention of workers' compensation claims and the implementation of corporate safety programs to facilitate cultural change. Sherrilyn has worked extensively in the maritime industry for the past six years with the management and return to work coordination of ill and injured crew. |

Sean Lawrence Integrated Rating, P&O Maritime Services
Sean is a seafarer with P&O Maritime Services who suffered a serious work-related injury in 2009. Sean will share his arduous journey and his approach to his rehabilitation.

Rob Redenbach

Rob Redenbach has international experience in personal security and risk management. A former member of the Australian Defence Force, Rob has managed a security company in Papua New Guinea and trained with special forces in the United Kingdom as well as state and federal law enforcement agencies in the United States.
From 1994 to 1998 Rob lived in South Africa where he was a defensive tactics instructor for Nelson Mandela’s bodyguard team, and during the build-up to the 2000 Olympics he provided conflict resolution training to instructors from the Australian SAS and Federal Police. Still involved in the security industry on a select basis, his field experience includes assignments in Iraq and Afghanistan.
