Claims & rehabilitation

Everyone in the workplace has duties and responsibilities in relation to health, safety and rehabilitation at work.

If an employee is injured at work or has a work-related illness, it is important that they return to their normal work as quickly as possible in a way that protects their health.

If you have a work-related injury or illness, you may be eligible to receive compensation or other entitlements under the Seafarers Act.

You may be entitled to receive income support while you are unable to work or are on a rehabilitation program. This is known as incapacity payments.

Supports and benefits are available to assist in your recovery including medical treatment, attendant care services, household services, and aids.

If you are unable to work as a result of your work-related injury or illness, your employer must assist you to safely return to work as soon as practicable.

The Seafarers Act provides for payment of lump sum compensation for permanent impairment and non-economic loss resulting from a work-related injury or illness.

Compensation or assistance following a work-related death.

You can request a reconsideration of a primary decision made under the Seafarers Act. Alternative dispute resolution methods can also be requested.

Statutory rates for compensation and benefits are set by the Seafarers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1992 (Seafarers Act).
