Comcare is committed to ensuring information published on the Comcare website is accessible and usable to people of all abilities. Comcare believes all users should have access to information and functionality to allow them to equally engage with government.
Comcare ensures when designing web pages, that they display and function in multiple browsers. We have optimized our graphics and download to ensure bandwidth times are minimised for those people in rural or remote areas.
Comcare has taken a user centred approach when designing the website and has undertaken extensive usability testing.
National Accessibility Strategy
Comcare has opted into the National Accessibility Strategy, a whole of Government initiative endorsed by Australian Government Information Office.
Australian agencies under the FMA Act, and those such as Comcare who have opted in are required to meet the WCAG 2.0 compliance (single A) developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), by 2012. Additionally agencies will meet (double AA) by 2014. Comcare is aiming to meet the (double AA) compliance by the end of 2012 where possible.
Our homepage is verified as (WCAG AA) compliant already- a standard we are currently aiming across the site. Comcare wishes to stay at the forefront of website accessibility and usability.
Comcare has implemented ReadSpeaker® across our website. ReadSpeaker® is a family of online text to speech solutions that speech-enables Comcare's website for the benefit of people who would like to listen instead of (or as well as) read the web page.
ReadSpeaker® is built with usability, accessibility and device independency in mind to provide maximum access not only from PCs but also from iPhones and other smartphones including BlackBerry and Android powered phones, iPads, MP3 playing devices, PDAs, Video game consoles, Interactive Internet TVs and Internet booths and kiosks.
Comcare is also committed to providing multiple formats of publications. Where possible Comcare will publish a PDF and RTF version, with the intention of also providing html versions of suitable documents by 2014.
Comcare's website is optimised for Microsoft Explorer 8 and Mozilla Firefox 7.0
We make every effort to ensure our pages render in other available browsers such as Safari.
Comcare has ensured we have a tabbed index of all navigation elements on the page so keyboard users can access all area's on the website using function keys.
Users can control the text size by selecting the A- or A+ icons or using the following keyboard shortcuts.
- On Windows Ctrl - to make text smaller or Ctrl + to make text larger.
- On Mac Command/Apple - to make text smaller or Command/Apple + to make text larger.
Page structure & links
The pages follow a logical order whereby Heading 1 is the title of the page and Heading 2 is used for subtitles. Links in text content follow the color standard determined by W3C.
- links are blue
- visited links are aqua bright blue
- hover links are deep red
This site has no separate HTML-pages for printing. Instead, a print friendly version will be sent directly to the printer. The printed result will omit all irrelevant elements on the page. Text prints in black.
